With the cadaver in a supine position, make the incisions on the anterior chest wall indicated in Figure 4.2 and reflect the skin flaps laterally. As the superficial fascia is removed from the dissection field, identify the segmentally arranged neurovascular bundles that pierce the deep fascia of the underlying muscle. They enter the superficial fascia about 1 to 2 cm lateral to the sternum in the intercostal spaces. These are anterior cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerves and anterior intercostal vessels. As the dissection progresses, similar vessels and nerves segmentally arranged in the
right and left mid-axillary lines may also be observed. These are the lateral cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerves and posterior intercostal vessels. The origin of these neurovascular elements will be examined when the thoracic wall is studied. Links and References:
