Identify the superficial veins of the arm and forearm. The two principal veins of the upper extremity are the basilic vein and the cephalic vein. These two veins arise from the dorsal venous arch of the hand. The cephalic vein begins on the lateral (radial) side of the hand. The basilic vein begins on the medial (ulnar) side of the hand.
