The extensor muscles of the forearm can be divided into a superficial and a deep group. The superficial extensor group of muscles includes the:

• brachioradialis muscle,
• extensor carpi radialis longus muscle,
• extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle,
• extensor digitorum muscle which gives rise to four tendons some distance proximal to the extensor retinaculum,
• extensor digiti minimi muscle which passes in its own compartment through the extensor retinaculum and joins the fourth tendon of the extensor digitorum muscle.
• extensor carpi ulnaris muscle.
