The sternoclavicular joint is the only joint between the appendicular skeleton (upper extremity) and the axial skeleton (Figure 10.1). It is formed by the junction of the clavicle with the upper lateral aspect of the manubrium (or clavicular notch). Identify the manubrium, jugular notch, clavicle, and capsule surrounding the sternoclavicular joint.
The anterior aspect of the articular capsule of the sternoclavicular joint attaches to the clavicular notch of the manubrium and the first costal cartilage. Identify the costoclavicular ligament which strengthens this region of the capsule. The interclavicular ligament spans between the sternal ends of the right and left clavicles. The subclavius muscle can be seen adjacent to the costoclavicular ligament.Links and References:
