Reflect the gluteus maximus muscle laterally and confirm that its upper fibers attach distally to the femur . The lower three-quarters of its fibers insert into the iliotibial tract.

Deep to the gluteus maximus muscle, identify and open the trochanteric bursa overlying the greater trochanter of the femur. This bursa cushions and protects the gluteus maximus muscle from excessive friction and wear as it moves over the greater trochanter.
