With the gluteus medius muscle reflected, identify the underlying gluteus minimus muscle. It takes its origin from the outer surface of the ilium and inserts into the anterior surface of the greater trochanter of the femur. In the plane between the gluteus minimus and medius muscles, identify the superior gluteal nerve, which is accompanied by deep branches of the superior gluteal vessels. This nerve supplies the gluteus medius muscle, gluteus minimus muscle and tensor fasciae latae muscle. Attempt to identify the nerve branches to each of these muscles.
