On the posterior aspect of the lateral malleolus, identify the superior peroneal retinaculum. This thickening of deep fascia keeps the tendons of the muscles (peroneus longus muscle and peroneus brevis muscle) of the lateral crural compartment in place as they pass posterior to the lateral malleolus.
Next, identify the inferior peroneal retinaculum. It holds the tendons of peroneus longus muscle and peroneus brevis muscle against the calcaneus.Links and References:
