As the tendons of the deep muscles of the posterior compartment of the leg and the tibial nerve and posterior tibial vessels cross the ankle immediately posterior to the medial malleolus, the sequence from anterior to posterior is:
- tendon of tibialis posterior muscle
- tendon of flexor digitorum longus muscle
- tibial nerve and posterior tibial vessels
- tendon of flexor hallucis longus muscle
A helpful mnemonic to remember the order of the structures posterior to the medial malleolus is the phrase:
"Tom, Dick, and Harry." T=Tibialis posterior, D=Flexor digitorum longus, an=posterior tibial artery and tibial nerve, and H=Flexor hallucis longus.
