Cut the plantar aponeurosis and reflect it to expose the muscles of the first layer of the sole of the foot (Figure 16.4). Identify the muscles of the first layer.

  • The flexor digitorum brevis muscle is located in the midline. It underlies the plantar aponeurosis. Clean the tendons of the flexor digitorum brevis muscle and trace them to their insertion into the base of the middle phalanx of the toes.
  • The abductor hallucis muscle is located on the medial side of the flexor digitorum brevis muscle.
  • The abductor digiti minimi muscle is located on the lateral side of the flexor digitorum brevis muscle.
