Within the joint cavity, identify the following structures:
- (round) ligament of the head of the femur [another specimen]
- transverse acetabular ligament
- acetabular labrum [another specimen ]
The transverse acetabular ligament spans the acetabular notch. The foveolar artery, a branch of the obturator artery, passes through this notch to reach the round ligament of the head of the femur. This artery supplies the head of the femur. The acetabular labrum is a fibrocartilaginous ring that increases the depth of the socket, and thus gives greater stability to the hip.
