(2 of 2) The lateral ligament of the ankle has three distinct slips:
- anterior talofibular ligament
- calcaneofibular ligament, [posterior view]
- posterior talofibular ligament, [posterior view] Note: It is important to recognize that the ankle (tibiotalar) joint functions only in flexion (also called plantar-flexion) and extension (or dorsi-flexion). Movements of inversion and eversion occur in the tarsal and metatarsal joints. Ankle sprains are fairly common injuries that are usually caused by forceful inversion of the foot. This causes injury to the lateral ligaments of the ankle.
