Open each pleural cavity [left] (i.e., sac) by cutting through the anterior portion of parietal pleura [identified by finger]. It may have been torn during the removal of the anterior chest wall.
The two pleural cavities are separate compartments and are not continuous with each other. The parietal pleura is a thin serous membrane. It is given names that describe its location, i.e. costal pleura, diaphragmatic pleura, mediastinal pleura, and cervical pleura. Each of these portions of the parietal pleura will be identified during this exercise (Figure 19.2).
