Next, identify the phrenic and vagus nerves that pass near the root of each lung. The phrenic nerve passes anterior to the root of the lung, and the vagus nerve passes posterior to the root of the lung. Reflect each lung laterally, and use scissors to cut the root of each lung and pulmonary ligament.
