Step 29. The Aortic Valve and Aortic Sinuses

Finally, study the aortic valve [cross-section] and its three semilunar cusps [cross-section]: a right cusp, a left cusp, and a posterior (non-coronary) cusp (Figure 20.7). At the middle of the free margin of each cusp, identify a fibrous thickening, called the nodule.

Between the cusps of the aortic valve and the adjacent inner wall of the ascending aorta, identify the aortic sinuses (also known as sinuses of Valsalva [tip of the probe is located in the sinus]. Within the right and left aortic sinuses, also identify the opening of the right coronary artery and the opening of the left coronary artery.
