The superficial muscles of the face are collectively termed the muscles of facial expression (e.g. orbicularis oculi muscle). (Figure 23.2). Many of them function as sphincters or dilators. Muscles of facial expression are grouped around openings including the orbits, mouth, nose and ears, as well as on the scalp. These facial muscles will not be studied individually. Consult a text for specific information on the individual facial muscles.
