Medial and deep to the thyrocervical trunk, identify the vertebral artery. It passes superiorly in the triangular-shaped region between the longus colei muscle medially and the scalenus anterior muscle laterally (Figure 26.3). The transverse process of the sixth cervical vertebra is at the apex of this triangle. Follow the vertebral artery superiorly to the point at which it enters the foramen transversarium of the C6 vertebra. Also identify the vertebral vein, which accompanies the vertebral artery.
