With a chisel and hammer, remove the floor of the middle cranial fossa, i.e. the tegmen tympani in order to study the middle ear. Only remove the most superior layer of bone (about 1-2 mm) initially. Subsequently, remove more bone in sequential stages until the middle ear cavity is unroofed.

• three ossicles (malleus, incus, stapes)
• two skeletal muscles (stapedius muscle, tensor tympani muscle)
• chorda tympani nerve
• opening of the auditory (Eustachian) tube
• tympanic membrane (eardrum)
