Continue to remove the floor of the middle cranial fossae until the internal auditory canal has been unroofed. Observe the facial nerve and the vestibulocochlear nerve within the internal auditory canal (Figure 30.5). The main divisions of the vestibulocochlear nerve are: the cochlear nerve, which is responsible for hearing, and the vestibular nerve, which is responsible for maintenance of posture and equilibrium.
