Lateral to the pharynx in the parapharyngeal space, identify the:

• sympathetic trunk [forceps holds the superior cervical ganglion]
• spinal accessory nerve (CN XI), left, right
• vagus nerve (CN X) [probe passes laterally beneath the main trunk of the vagus and the tip of the probe indicates the superior laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve]
• superior laryngeal nerve
• internal laryngeal nerve
• external laryngeal nerve, beneath the lower probe
• hypoglossal nerve, indicated by the probe, descendens hypoglossi held by forceps
• descendens hypoglossi
• glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX), left
