Reflect the mucosa of the piriform recess and identify the course of the internal laryngeal nerve and superior laryngeal artery. They pass through the thyrohyoid membrane and into the piriform recess where they supply the mucous membrane above the level of the vocal folds (Figure 32.5). The external laryngeal nerve supplies only the cricothyroid muscle.
