(2 of 2) The uvulae muscle lies in the median plane and extends to the inferior border of the soft palate, the uvula.
The anterior portion of the mucosa of the soft palate is innervated by the lesser palatine nerve and the posterior portion of the glossopharyngeal nerve. The muscles of the soft palate are innervated by the pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve, except for the tensor veli palatini muscle which is innervated by the mandibular nerve. The soft palate functions during phonation and seals the nasopharynx from the oropharynx during swallowing.
