Next, examine the liver. To mobilize the liver, first sever the hepatophrenic ligament near its attachment to the diaphragm. Continue this incision toward the right side and cut the right triangular ligament. On the left side, cut the left triangular ligament. Pull the liver inferiorly and separate it from the diaphragm . Use a scalpel or scissors to sever the inferior vena cava at the hiatus of the inferior vena cava in the diaphragm. Now cut through the hepatorenal ligament and pull the liver forward .
