Deep and medial to the right crus of the diaphragm at approximately the level of the L2 vertebra, identify the cisterna chyli. This structure is the beginning of the thoracic duct and is formed by the joining of the right and left lumbar and intestinal lymphatic trunks. The abdominal portion of the thoracic duct enters the thorax through the aortic hiatus.
