Identify the pectinate line, which runs along the bases of the anal valves. This line serves as an important anatomic landmark to delineate the blood supply and innervation of the anal canal.

Inferior to the pectinate line, identify the pecten and the white line (of Hilton), which separates the mucosal from the cutaneous portion of the anal canal.
