(2 of 3) The levator ani muscle provides stability and elasticity to the pelvic floor as well as support to the pelvic organs.
The levator ani muscle is composed of three parts:
- puborectalis muscle, which attaches to the pubic rami and encircles the rectum. This muscle provides support to the urinary bladder and the prostate gland. It also maintains the anorectal angle
- pubococcygeus muscle, which attaches to the pubic rami and the coccyx
- iliococcygeus muscle, which originates from the arcus tendinous of the levator ani muscle on the obturator internus fascia
