The superficial veins of the upper and lower extremities contain valves that maintain the flow of blood toward the heart. These valves are large and prominent in the saphenous vein. Use scissors or a scalpel to slit open the great saphenous vein near the saphenous hiatus and examine one of the valves of the saphenous vein [shown in an isolated specimen ]. Also, confirm the existence of the numerous perforating veins [probe] that pierce the fascia lata and connect the superficial veins to the network of deep veins of the lower extremity.
