The popliteal fossa is a diamond-shaped area located on the posterior aspect of the knee. Remove the fascia that covers the popliteal fossa and forms its roof. At this time, it may also be helpful to remove the deep (crural) fascia that covers the proximal portion of the posterior leg.
Identify the muscles that form the borders of the popliteal fossa (Figure 14.2). The superior borders of the popliteal fossa are formed by the biceps femoris muscle laterally and the semitendinosus muscle and semimembranosus muscle medially. Inferiorly, the borders of the fossa are formed by the medial and lateral heads of gastrocnemius muscle.Links and References:
