Near the superior apex of the popliteal fossa, the sciatic nerve usually divides into its two major divisions (or branches), the common peroneal nerve and tibial nerve. Cutaneous branches of these nerves, the medial sural nerve and lateral sural nerve, which convey sensation from the posterior and lateral aspect of the leg, were identified when the skin was removed. Identify these nerves again and follow them to their origin.
