The hip joint [another specimen] is the articulation between the lower extremity and the axial skeleton (Figure 17.1 and Figure 17.2). The articular capsule of the hip joint lies deep to the muscles of the gluteal region and upper anterolateral thigh. These muscles have been removed to expose the thick fibrous capsule of the hip joint. For orientation, review the following key bony landmarks on the cadaver specimen:
