The posterior part of the articular capsule has two distinct thickenings, called the oblique popliteal ligament and arcuate popliteal ligament. The oblique popliteal ligament is, in part, the tendinous continuation of the semimembranous muscle. It crosses the posterior aspect of the knee to reach the medial condyle of the tibia. The arcuate popliteal ligament is located on the posterolateral side of the knee and spans from the head of the fibula to the lateral condyle of the femur.
