To view the cavity of the knee joint and the suprapatellar bursa, the quadriceps tendon is cut transversely, and the patella is reflected distally 
. This orientation reveals the articular surfaces of the bones, which are covered with hyaline cartilage. These articular surfaces of the knee include the following:
- internal surface of the patella
- patellar surface of the femur
- synovial membrane
- articular surface of the tibial condyles
The remainder of the joint cavity is lined with synovial membrane.
