The two pleural cavities are separate compartments and are not continuous with each other. The parietal pleura is a thin serous membrane. It is given names that describe its location, i.e. costal pleura, diaphragmatic pleura, mediastinal pleura, and cervical pleura. Each of these portions of the parietal pleura will be identified during this exercise (Figure 19.2).
