In preparation for opening of the pericardial sac [cross-section], reflect superiorly or laterally the left internal thoracic artery and vein [ cross-section ]. Identify the superior vena cava, arch of the aorta, and pulmonary trunk. Between the pulmonary trunk and the arch of the aorta, identify the ligamentum arteriosum [probe]. This structure is a remnant of the fetal ductus arteriosus, that is an important vessel that allows blood to bypass the lungs during fetal development.
