In an intercostal space, clean and identify a posterior intercostal vein, and artery, and intercostal nerve [cross-section]. (Remember the mnemonic VAN to recall the orientation of these structures.)

Clean and identify the right and left sympathetic trunks [two probes], which course along the vertebral bodies near the heads of the ribs.

Identify the sympathetic (paravertebral) ganglia [cross-section ], which appears as periodic thickenings along the trunk
(Figure 21.6). The first thoracic
sympathetic ganglion frequently fuses with
the inferior cervical ganglion to form the
stellate ganglion. Attempt to identify the
stellate ganglion.
