Make the skin incisions on the face and neck indicated in Figure 23.1 and reflect the skin laterally . Do not make deep incisions. Care must be exercised because the facial skin is very thin and the underlying fascia and muscles may be damaged as the skin is reflected. Identify the platysma muscle [posterior edge of left platysma muscle] which covers the anterior surface of the neck. It extends from the body of the mandible to the clavicle. Care must be taken in reflecting the skin over this muscle because its fibers are located in the superficial fascia.
