Anterior to the masseter muscle, identify the buccal fat pad [held by forceps]. Remove this fat pad carefully to expose the underlying buccinator muscle, (a muscle of facial expression) [tip of forceps]. Approximately 2 cm inferior and parallel to the zygomatic arch, identify the parotid duct [different specimen] as it crosses the superficial surface of the masseter muscle. At the anterior border of the masseter muscle, the parotid duct pierces the buccinator muscle and enters the vestibule of the oral cavity opposite the second upper premolar tooth.
