Medial to the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII), the lingual artery arises from the external carotid artery, just behind the greater horn of the hyoid bone, and passes along the inferior border of the posterior belly of the digastric muscle to reach the tongue. Just superior to the origin of the lingual artery, identify the facial artery. In some individuals, the lingual artery arises from a common origin with the facial artery [as is the case in the image shown].
