Step 15. The Occipital Artery and Ascending Pharyngeal Artery

Identify the occipital artery as it arises from the posterior aspect of the external carotid artery. This artery runs superiorly and, shortly after arising from the external carotid artery, gives a muscular branch to the sternocleidomastoid muscle.

Finally, identify the ascending pharyngeal artery as it arises from the medial aspect of the external carotid artery. It is sometimes difficult to locate and will be identified again ( see Laboratory Thirty-One).
