Identify the dura mater [sagittal section], the outer of the three coverings of the brain. It is the tough membrane which is made up of two individual layers. The outer layer of the dura mater is continuous with the periosteum and adheres intimately to the cranial bones. This periosteum layer is also called endocranium. The inner portion of the dura mater is called the meningeal layer which is in contact with the thin underlying arachnoid mater. The space between the inner surface of the calvaria and endocranial layer of the dura mater is a potential space, called the epidural space. Links and References: |
