Step 8. The Nasociliary Nerve and its Branches

Identify the nasociliary nerve [nearest tip of right probe] (see Figure 29.3). This nerve can be found running obliquely toward the medial wall of the orbit, passing between the superior oblique muscle and the medial rectus muscle.

A branch of the nasociliary nerve, the anterior ethmoidal nerve, passes through the anterior ethmoidal foramen to reach the nasal cavity. The anterior ethmoidal nerve may be difficult to identify. It provides sensory innervation to the mucosa of the medial and lateral walls of the nasal cavity before it ends as the external nasal nerve.
