Identify the ophthalmic artery [tip of right probe] which travels with the nasociliary nerve, crosses the optic nerve superiorly, and gives branches within the orbit. Attempt to identify the superior ophthalmic vein which joins a branch of the inferior ophthalmic vein and passes through the superior orbital fissure. This vein drains blood into the cavernous sinus. Branches of the inferior ophthalmic vein also communicate via the inferior orbital fissure with the pterygoid venous plexus. These ophthalmic veins are difficult to identify in the cadaver.
