Examine the optic nerve [cross-section]. This nerve is actually a continuation of the brain and, therefore, shares the brain's meningeal coverings. Incise the dural sheath and sever the optic nerve close to its connection to the eyeball. At the center of the nerve, attempt to identify the central retinal artery.
