Trace the extraocular muscles to their origin. Realize that all extraocular muscles, except the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, superior oblique muscle, and inferior oblique muscle attach to the fibrous annulus ring of Zinn (annulus tendinous) around the optic nerve. Review the nerve supply to these extraocular muscles.
Helpful mnemonic:
Some individuals find it useful to use the formula, LR6(SO4)3 as a memory aid.
The lateral rectus muscle is innervated
by CN VI, the superior oblique muscle is
innervated by CN IV, and all of the other
extraocular muscles are innervated by
CN III.
