Next, identify the retropharyngeal space [cross-section]. This space is located between the prevertebral fascia, which invests the prevertebral muscles, and the posterior aspect of the pharynx. This space is continuous inferiorly with the mediastinum and laterally with the parapharyngeal spaces.
