Identify the stylopharyngeus muscle [left] [right] as it arises from the styloid process. Follow this muscle inferiorly and confirm that its fibers travel medially and inferiorly between fibers of superior and middle pharyngeal constrictor muscles and attach into the posterior pharyngeal wall. Identify the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) [left ] [right ] as it lies on the posterior aspect of the stylopharyngeus muscle. Distally, the nerve passes between the superior and middle pharyngeal constrictor muscles laterally to reach the posterior aspect of the tongue.
