Inferior to the sphenopalatine foramen, remove the perpendicular plate of the palatine bone and identify the greater and lesser palatine nerves and vessels [probe][greater palatine nerve and vessels ] [lesser palatine nerve and vessels ]. The greater palatine nerve and vessels enter the hard palate via the greater palatine foramen. The greater palatine canal can be identified by removing mucosa from the hard palate and placing a probe into the foramen [a second probe identifies tip of a probe that entered greater palatine foramen and is in the greater palatine canal. The tips of the two probes are in the pterygopalatine fossa].
