Remove the posterior wall of the maxillary sinus. This wall is also the anterior wall of the pterygopalatine fossa. See an anatomy textbook to delineate the boundaries of the pterygopalatine fossa.
Because of the extremely small size of the fossa and the many branches of the nerves and vessels within the fossa, it is often difficult to identify individual nerves and vessels. Use the accompanying diagram (Figure 33.5) to aid in identifying the major branches of the maxillary nerve. The maxillary nerve enters the pterygopalatine fossa via foramen rotundum [anterior view, superior view]. Identify the nerve of the pterygoid canal (Vidian’s nerve), at the anterior opening of the pterygoid canal,[anterior view , posterior opening of pterygoid canal].
