Step 7. Extrinsic and Intrinsic Muscles of the Tongue

Bisect the tongue from its anterior tip to its attachment to hyoid bone, and identify its extrinsic muscles (Figure 34.2):

hyoglossus muscle, cross-section , frontal section
genioglossus muscle, cross-section
styloglossus muscle, cross-section
palatoglossus muscle

The intrinsic muscles contribute to the
overall muscle mass of the tongue. They
run at various angles to one another.
They are the longitudinal muscles of
the tongue, the transverse muscles
of the tongue, and the vertical
muscles of the tongue.
