At the posterior border of the hyoglossus muscle, identify the lingual artery [indicated by the probe; posterior edge of hyoglossus muscle held by forceps] as it arises from the external carotid artery (Figure 34.3). The lingual artery [cross-section] passes anteriorly on the medial (deep) surface of the hyoglossus muscle .
