Identify the epiploic foramen (of Winslow) which allows communication between the greater peritoneal sac and the lesser peritoneal sac. It is located immediately posterior to the free margin of the lesser omentum, i.e. hepatoduodenal ligament. Place your finger into the epiploic foramen and identify its boundaries:
- superior, the caudate lobe of the liver
- anterior, the hepatoduodenal ligament, containing the components of the portal triad
- inferior, the first part of the duodenum
- posterior, the peritoneum that covers the inferior vena cava
